The debate on the potential macroeconomic effects of the liberalization of the capital account has taken prominent hold during recent years in Chile, like in other economies in the region. The significant inflow of capital seen in most Latin American economies in the early 90’s, together with the beginning of a vast set of structural reforms to elevate global efficiency, has led to an intense debate among experts as to the convenience of taking material steps towards a greater financial liberalization. In the specific case of the Southern Cone economies, this debate has been heavily influenced by the foreign debt crisis in the early part of the last decade.
