Abstract: In this paper I analyse the effect of lead contamination in Arica on the cognitive and non-cognitive skills of young children. Arica has received lead contamination from two main sources: toxic waste disposal and concentrated mineral storage related to the
Arica-La Paz railroad. Using data from the ELPI 2010 and the ELPI 2012 and soil lead levels from a 2009 CONAMA study, I perform OLS regressions in both years to asses short and medium term effects. Results show negative effects on both cognitive and non-cognitive skills for children living closer to more contaminated areas.
