This paper examines the trade patterns of Chile and Argentina (two Southern Cone countries) with Japan during the 1930s. We find a correlation between the Japanese quest for new markets and the surge in trade links between the three countries. This process resulted from a strategy to position these countries in the global economy amid the effects of the Great Depression. For Japanese textiles, Argentina and Chile were new but small markets. For Argentina and Chile, the Japanese market was an opportunity to sell their traditional products rather than a space for them to diversify their exports.

Este artículo examina los patrones comerciales de Chile y Argentina (dos países del Cono Sur) con Japón durante la década de 1930. Encontramos una correlación entre la búsqueda japonesa de nuevos mercados y el aumento de los vínculos comerciales entre los tres países. Este proceso fue el resultado de una estrategia para posicionar a estos países en la economía global en medio de los efectos de la Gran Depresión. Para los textiles japoneses, Argentina y Chile eran mercados nuevos pero pequeños. Para Argentina y Chile, el mercado japonés fue una oportunidad para vender sus productos tradicionales más que un espacio para diversificar sus exportaciones.
