Do prudent consumers save against inflation risk?

Abstract

The main result in this note is that prudence (convex marginal utility of consumption) is not a sufficient condition for price risk to generate precautionary savings. With a logarithmic utility function, the consumer spends a constant fraction of total (nominal) wealth on nominal consumption. As a result, an unexpected change in the price level is absorbed by real consumption, leaving nominal consumption and savings
unchanged.
